The Superior and District Courts Judges of Cowlitz County are pleased to announce they will celebrate Juror Appreciation Week, May 9-13, to recognize the service and participation of jurors from our local community.They will present a joint proclamation to the Board of County Commissioners on May 10, 2016 at 9 a.m. to honor the citizens of this County who have served as a juror this week and in the past.

"Our jurors have a great responsibility and play a vital role in our justice system.We recognize that jury service is an imposition on the time and lives of our citizens and we greatly appreciate the dedicated people that answer the call to fulfill their civic duty as jurors.On behalf of the judges of Cowlitz County Superior Court and District Court, we want to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who serve." said Superior Court Judge Marilyn Haan.

"I've had the privilege of working with jurors in hundreds of trials, and I'm always impressed with their dedication and common sense.Trial by jury is a vital part of our heritage as a free people.Thank you, jurors, for bringing the written words of the Constitution to life!", said the Honorable David Koss.

Last year approximately 18,200 juror summons were mailed out to prospective jurors.Of those summons approximately 6,500 people appeared for jury service, after some 6,500 were either excused, disqualified or deferred from service and the balance do not respond.Of the 6,500 people that did appear 64% served in Superior Court and 36% in District Court.

We ask that anyone who is interested in learning more about this proclamation or in observing the proclamation presentation to please attend the Board of County Commissioner public meeting on May 10, 2016 at 9 a.m. in the Commissioners hearing room.We look forward to your attendance at this very important event.
